This Mid Century Murano glass table lamp is made in the style of Barovier & Toso, a renowned Murano glasshouse. The lamp was crafted from white glass forming a gourd shape on the bottom and a half dome on top.
The pattern of the glass is made using the hobnail glass technique with layers of mauve glass poured over. Hobnail glass has a regular pattern of raised knobs like the hobnail studs sometimes used on boot soles. It can be a pattern created by blowing a glass vessel into a mold, or it can be achieved by pressing the glass into a mold. The blush pink/mauve and white hues were achieved by adding selected metal oxides to the silica during melting. To achieve the colors, an incredible amount of accuracy is required in terms of proportions and timing.
The Barovier family from Murano, Italy, have been world leaders in glass production since the Middle Ages. The Company was founded in 1295. In 1939 the company merged with the Toso family to become “Barovier & Toso”. The glasshouses on the island of Murano, like Barovier & Toso, are famous for florid glassworks made of pincered and molded blown glass.
Crafted in the renowned glass houses of Murano, this lamp is a testament to centuries of glassmaking excellence. Its intricate details and craftsmanship make it a standout piece, perfect for enhancing the elegance of any space, whether traditional or contemporary.
