Stephen I. Newman's career as a professional artist spans more than five decades and several types of visual arts including painting, drawing and mixed media.
Born in the City of Brotherly Love, Newman earned his bachelor of arts degree from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1964 before completing graduate courses in painting and drawing at Temple University's Tyler School of Art in 1969.
Newman's first of many successful shows took place in 1970, and his works have been in museums, gallery shows, exhibitions and public spaces in several states during each decade since.
While maintaining Pennsylvania as his home base, with a wanderlust fueled by the era, Newman explored new perspectives in art while traveling across France and Italy in 1971.
Three years later he drove across the USA and back to view the American landscape, and in 1981 he established residence in Santa Fe, N.M.
During the next 12 years, Newman also lived and worked in the Greater Los Angeles area before settling down in Thousand Oaks, Calif., in 1992. In addition to generating and array of works for private collections and civic displays, Newman's creativity also earned acclaim on the pages of Philadelphia Magazine, Southwest Art, Santa Fean Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, LA Daily News, the Santa Barbara News-Press, Montecito Life and the Palm Springs sun.
Newman describes his recent projects - including several large oil on canvas works that are Modern to abstract - as influenced by his experiences outdoors in many U.S. states, and states of mind.
"I like for the human imagination to be a part of my art work," said Newman. "Each person will bring to the art work something that is unique to him or her. Whether it's the use of disparate images in the transfer works or the abstract paintings, the work of art will speak to each person in their own language. It's the mystery in life and in art that is the missing piece to be supplied by the viewer." less
