About the manufacturer: The Willem II cigar factories were founded in 1916 by Harry Kersten. This descendant of a family of tobacco processors and traders from Puiflijk previously worked as a volunteer at the cigar factory of the Gebr. Van Best in Valkenswaard. By 1950, four additional branches were established in the region, and around 1970, the company employed approximately 2,200 workers. However, employment declined after 1970 due to a shrinking market and increased mechanization. In 1977, the company was sold to Consolidated Cigar Company. In 1982, Willem II was independent again, only to be acquired by La Paz, a competitor. As part of this company, Willem II became a subsidiary of Volvo, a Swedish company best known for its cars, who passed it on to Swedish Match Cigars, now Scandinavian Tobacco Group. less
