This Henri Matisse very rare vintage 1948 " Nice, Travail et Joie " Mourlot fine art lithograph print large custom framed landmark French travel poster is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The lithograph print poster is published by The Nice Tourism Office and The Mediterranean Union for Modern Art. Printed in France in 1948 in an unnumbered limited edition by Mourlot Imp. Paris. published to promote tourism in Nice and The Cote D'Azur internationally. It features an iconic artwork image created by Matisse in 1947 titled " Still Life with Pomegranates ", Edite Par Le Syndicat D'Initiative De Nice Et L'Union Mediteraneene Pour L'Art Moderne.
The Cote D'Azur and Nice also known as The French Riviera, is located on The Mediterranean coastline in The South of France. The warm climate and vivid colors attracted many famous artists during the first half of The 20th Century including Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, and Pablo Picasso. All of whom left a strong mark in The South of France, both culturally and emotionally.
Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The 20th Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art. Artworks by Matisse are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
This landmark fine art lithograph poster is one of the most iconic and desirable of the collaboration and long lasting partnership between the artist Matisse and Atelier Mourlot who together would create many important art posters. An example of this same poster is held in the permanent archive collection of many museums worldwide.
Beginning in the 1930's Fernand Mourlot invited the major master artists of the time into the lithography studio the learn the medium of printing together. Encouraging the artists to work directly on the lithography plates to create original; prints and posters in limited editions. The results of this artistic collaboration between master artists and Mourlot became internationally known for their originality, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
Matisse had a strong attachment to the city of Nice, he famously stated that there were several places in the world where he was most inspired to create : New York, The South Pacific, and Nice France which so enticed him at the age of 48, that apart from several travels abroad he stayed there for the rest of his life. For Matisse Nice was more a state of mind than a place. There he produced some of his most beautiful and important works of art.

The rare out of print large format framed lithograph print French travel poster measures 25 1/4" W X 40 1/2" H X 1 1/2" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern matte eggshell finish black wood museum box style frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.
