Klein, Norwood, Massachusetts. … Read more Mid-Century Art Deco Style Medical, Pharmaceutical, Apothecary Inspired Desk Clock. Made in the 1960s by Richard A. Klein, Norwood, Massachusetts. The clock is a patinated cast brass with pharmaceutical and medical symbols on each corner while the clock face is ‘numbered’ with alchemical symbols. The clock works, but has not been tested for accuracy and the cord may require being updated.

The alchemy symbols are as follows: 1:00 Aqua Vita 2:00 Bismuth 3:00 Lead 4:00 Tin 5:00 Sulphur of the Philosophers 6:00 Orpiment 7:00 Potash 8:00 Sulphur 9:00 Vinegar 10:00 Alum 11:00 Subacetate of Copper Crystals 12:00 To Filter. These symbols trace back to the eleventh century, representing metals, substances and processes employed in the art of alchemy. They also were used as a shorthand for working out recipes and notes, just as the symbols used by chemists today.
