Italy, 19th century or earlier. We did find an example of this piece previously sold at auction that was said to be 16th or 17th century, however, we can not confirm that on our end. We are confident this is an old example and not a Maitland Smith reproduction. There is undesirable markings to under belly.
This exquisite antique chiseled bronze sculpture, likely from the Grand Tour period or earlier, portrays a Venetian dolphin with remarkable craftsmanship and detail. The dolphin’s elongated body is gracefully curved, with intricate chiseled textures along its scales and fins. This form reflects the classic Venetian depiction of dolphins, often associated with maritime symbols of protection and guidance. The finely cast bronze has developed a rich patina over time, adding to its character and authenticity. This sculpture embodies the spirit of the Grand Tour era, when affluent travelers collected such pieces as souvenirs of their journeys to classical sites in Italy and beyond.
Historical Significance: Grand Tour artifacts were prized by European aristocrats and intellectuals who traveled to the cultural capitals of Europe, particularly Italy, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Venice, with its maritime heritage, was a key destination, and depictions of dolphins, tied to the city’s seafaring past, were popular motifs in Venetian art. This bronze dolphin likely served as a reminder of these journeys, representing both the artistry and rich history of the Venetian Republic.
