British immigrant Frank Leslie (a.k.a. Henry Carter,) failing to find a job in New York City as an illustrator, by 1855 had established Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. One of his first supporters and promoters was PT Barnum who commissioned him to design a large poster. Frank Leslie’s appeal to the public’s interest in seeing pictures of events of the day sealed his success as a newspaper publisher for 7 decades. The newspaper was defunct by 1922. In its day, the illustrated newspaper had covered events such as John Brown’s raid at Harper’s Ferry, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. This engraving celebrates the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on May 24, 1883. It is a composite of images of the bridge and the people visiting it.
