This pottery jug is glazed ochre with varying tones achieved through time and use. The four loops along the sides add a graphic element to the vessel though originally intended for threading rope to transport water or oil. Likely from Provence/south of France. These utilitarian vessels got their name due to the fact that monks would rely on an individual’s “conscience” to give oil or water for the needy. Unsigned.
