Practically, every part of this chest is original: the feet, the back, the drawer bottoms, even the drawer runners that the drawers slide on. The only replacements are the handles, which are high quality reproductions. There is significant wear to the finish on the front edge of the top (pictured). We think it adds to the character of the piece, so we have chosen to leave it as is. There are small sections of missing string inlay and a chip in the patera inlay in the top along with the typical scratches and marks you would expect to find on a piece that is over 200 years old. less

What happens when you ask a small town cabinetmaker in the Connecticut River Valley to make their finest work? You get a magnificent chest like this one.
So much thought and attention went into the design this piece. Practically every surface is finely inlaid: the patera inlay on the top, the string inlay along the top edges and drawer faces, and the parallel inlaid columns on the canted corners. The moldings are incredible as well: the thumb molding over cove molding on the top, the beaded edge along the drawers, and the stepped molding along the base and at the bottom and top of each canted corner. The overall effect is so powerful! Finally, the flowing skirt with the curled central pattern adds further gracefulness to an already sophisticated piece.
The cherry primary wood positively glows in natural light, and paired with white pine secondary wood, this piece is clearly from New England. The thickness of the wood used and the exposed dovetails on the side of the feet are evidence of non-coastal, more rural work. Finally, the back feet are constructed from a single board dovetailed into the side of the case, a technique distinct to the Connecticut River Valley, spanning central CT to western MA.
The wear to the finish on the top adds to the historic feel of this chest and combined with its remarkable design, this chest will add a depth of character to any space it is in. less
