Rare Shōwa era Japanese painted 4-panel Byobu, folding screen, after one of Utagawa Hiroshige's woodblock prints from his series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō Road", depicting Forty-Seventh Station: Seki. In the title block: "The Early Morning Departure from the Residence". It is still dark, and the lord's servants are carrying lanterns. On the left, we see the lord's large palanquin and an official in official costume gives orders to the bearers. In the center, at the top, a servant with two large lanterns and four samurai respectfully awaiting orders. The draperies are decorated with fanciful coats of arms that Hiroshige himself composed.
Very detailed. Watercolor, gouache and ink on paper. Silk border. Lacquered brown wood frame with engraved metal corners. Silk and paper on back. Two Asian style brass hangers on back of the frame. Japan, Shōwa era c. 1960-1970s. Very good condition - minor age wear overall, a small repair and water stain on the 4th panel, two patches on the back of the 4th panel, strong hinges, clean sturdy.
