This is a rare original, highly coveted David Hockney poster produced for his 1977 exhibition at the Andre Emmerich Gallery in New York. The featured celebrated work, “Self-Portrait with Blue Guitar”, is an oil painting on canvas in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, Ludwig Foundation in Vienna. The work invites the viewer into Hockney’s creative universe. A curtain has been pulled back, revealing the artist on center stage in his studio, sitting at a table drawing a picture of a guitar. The work is a meditation on the different ways of “seeing”, exploring the relationship between reality and its transformation into art through the imagination and vision of the artist. Pictures within pictures and varied styles of representation highlight this theme. Hockney’s lifelong exploration of image-making is at the core of this iconic self-portrait, capturing the essence of his artistic practice.
This original vintage poster from 1977 has become a sought-after collectible due to its high quality and also because it was the promotional poster for the exhibition where this important work was first presented. less
