This " After Mountains and Sea : Frankenthaler 1956 - 1959 " rare vintage 1998 first edition Abstract Expressionist lithograph print Helen Frankenthaler hardcover exhibition art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover art book with natural oatmeal linen covered boards, monochrome embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers, New York. Printed in Germany in 1998 by Cantz, copyright 1998 The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
It features a monograph exhibition survey of the Abstract Expressionist artworks of the artist Helen Frankenthaler, with accompanied compelling text conversation between Frankenthaler and Julia Brown as well as essays by Brown and Susan Cross.
Helen Frankenthaler ( 1928 - 2011 ) is an American Abstract Expressionist painter of a liberal Jewish background, and is a major contributor to the history of Postwar Modernist painting. She exhibited her work for over six decades, spanning several generations of Abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever changing new art works.
Her work has been the subject of several retrospective exhibitions including The Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, The Jewish Museum, and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been exhibited worldwide since the 1950's, and was awarded The National Medal of the Arts in 2001. Artworks by Frankenthaler are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In 1952, at the age of 23, Frankenthaler created her legendary painting " After Mountains and Sea ". Comprised of translucent washes of thinned-down pigment embedded in unprimed canvas, the large-scale painting was the first in which she used her soak-stained technique. The result evokes a sense of openness and atmospheric space without relying on traditional illusionism.
Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, this book explores Frankenthaler's artistic maturation, from the groundbreaking achievement of " Mountains and Sea " to the extraordinary paintings created from 1956 through 1959. Beautifully illustrated with full-color reproductions of her luminous art works.
The rare out of print 1st edition hardcover art book measures 9 5/8" W X 10 7/8" H X 1/2" D, with 96 pages. It features 77 offset lithograph print illustrations, including 64 in full color, and an artist chronology.
It is in excellent " like new " very clean condition consistent with age and very light signs of handling. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
