It has 2 Surface "Iron Ping" Chips but These Would have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and These Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common. less

This Really Great Looking Antique American Primitive Stoneware Storage Jug. LARGE SIZE - Measuring Approx 12 1/2 inches Tall x 11 3/4 inches Wide - Long. It is Embossed - Signed by the Well Documented Maker "A.J. BUTTLER MANUFACTERUR NEW BRUNSWICK N.J. ( NOTE THE MISSPELLING OF THE WORD MANUFACTURER ). Records Indicate that this Stoneware Company was Originally Started by EPHRAIM MACKAY in 1810 Then Later Sold by his Widow to the New Owner ALFRED J. BUTTLER in 1862 and Remaining in Business Until it was Sold Again in 1875. It is Rendered in a Very Unusual Squatted - Low Center of Gravity Form with a Classic American Salt Glaze Exterior. The Front of the Jug is Hand Decorated in Blue with 3 Tulip Flowers and a Number 3 Confirming its Three Gallon Liquid Storage Capacity. These Types of American Stoneware Items we Completely Hand Made out of Indigenous Clay on a Potters Wheel from Start to Finish and Therefore No 2 are Absolutely Identical. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Liquids such as Ciders, Vinegar, Ales, Liquors & Spirits, Spring Water Etc. It is in Very Nice All Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully.
