This semi abstract watercolor on paper is by Theodore Polos (1901-1976). It measures 23.5 x 17.5 inches (31.5 x 25 framed). It is signed in the lower right. The painting is in very good condition. It is nicely matted and framed with an acid-free mat and a ¾” wide gold frame. The very nice wooden frame is in good condition. The matte gold surface has a burnt umber undercoat that is faintly visible in small striations, but the undercoat is more visible in some areas than others, notably the upper area of the right frame. Painter and lithographer, Theodore Polos was born in Mytilene, Greece on Feb. 16, 1901. Polos emigrated to Boston in 1916 and to San Francisco in 1922. He studied with Constance Macky at the San Francisco Institute of Art and with Xavier Martinez at Oakland's College of Arts and Crafts. During the 1940s and 1950s he taught at both schools. He abandoned lithography in the late 1930s. Most of his years in California were spent as a resident of Oakland where he died in 1976. His works are often semi-abstract.
He was a member of: San Francisco Art Association. Group exhibitions include: San Francisco Museum of Art Inaugural, 1935; New York World's Fair, 1939; Golden Gate International, 1939: MOMA 1943, 1948; Art Institute of Chicago 1943, 1945; Carnegie Institute Invitational 1943-1946. Solo exhibitions include De Young Museum 1958; Oakland Museum, 1964. less
