This fabulous type of sewing basket was all the rage in the mid 20th-century! This beauty, however, is uniquely tall and nicely-sized. Made in Japan sometime in the 1960s, the sturdy round wooden frame’s exterior is rattan rope handwoven in an over and under basket weave pattern interspersed with diagonal cane splints all around in a soft pink with peachy undertones. There is a decorative triple band monochromatic “checkerboard” motif accent at the top and bottom of the basket, which is also repeated on the top of the lid. Swivel wooden loop handles are wrapped in rattan twine and conveniently fold down front and back. The bottom of the basket is covered in an animal print paper with a stamp that states “Made in Japan”. Three blonde wood peg feet gives it a nice boost of height and protects the bottom from wear. The interior compartment is fully lined in satin in a soft peachy pink hue. The top’s interior underside has plush pearl-accented tufted cushioning for pins and needles. Two hinges on the back allow the top to be fully opened with slender braided ropes on each side keeping it open for convenience. There is a removable plastic tray with four compartments, three small and one large, which will hold sewing or crafting supplies. On the exterior front, a there is a looped fastener to secure the top to the basket. It measures 13½” x 12” x 12” W/D/H with handles down, when handles are extended up for carrying this add 6½” of to the overall height; interior compartment 11” x 9¾” x 9¾“ H/W/D; weight 3 lbs. 2 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. This age-related wear entails a tiny tear on the upper right side on the underside of the top (see photo 7) which does not affect the beauty or utility of the top. Also, on the interior bottom, there are a couple of minuscule age tears (see photo 8) that do not impact the interior’s utility. While designed to store sewing accoutrements, it’s perfectly suited for storing craft or embroidery items with its extra tall height perfect for knitting needles. A fabulous piece for a collector of vintage sewing baskets or the perfect gift for someone who is.
