The circular bowl features polychrome decoration of figures, 19th century court scenes, in interior settings interspersed with floral, butterfly and fauna reserves. The early 20th century ormulu bronze mount features winged dragon handles, attached to a reticulated rim and acanthus leaf base.
Overall Measures: 16.875 H x 26.75 W x 17.75 D inches (13 Base D). Bowl: 6.5 H x 16 D inches (9 Base D).
Approx. Weight: 29 pounds, 12.4 ounces.
Provenance: Acquired by the Maryland-based Host Marriott Corporation for the redevelopment and opening of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, San Francisco, 1991, deaccessioned, 2016.
About the piece: The bowl is an export piece for the West, decoration thought to represent popular American perceptions of Chinese culture, likely of Cantonese origin. Approximately a century later, the bowl was styled into a jardiniere form. Apparently the piece was selected due its impressive turn of the century appearance, originally served as an opulent interior statement to complement the historic neoclassical landmark building designed by Napoleon LeBrun and Sons in 1909. Simply put, resplendent. less
