Vintage mid-century design by world renowned designer Raymond Loewy … specifically for Mengel.
Solid oak. Hard as a rock.
This piece has received a meticulous 25+ hour professional refinishing.
And most recently, in August of 2024 an updated modification; the finish was modified, by professionally spray painting the front bottom band board kick plate … in gloss black lacquer … to match the “other black” exterior. For a sleeker look.
This piece originally had a cerused
2-layer finish of a mild base coat of muted blue, and a top finish of a mild green. That “finish” had several troublesome scratches that were beyond restoration.
We had the entire original paint stripped and sanded … clean … to the original oak … before applying 5 coats of a very thin black lacquer spray finish.
The lacquer was thinly applied so as to not “drown out” … and conceal the deep natural wood grain.
The drawer pulls are original and are a heavy solid matte finish of a silver aluminum color.
The top drawer … divided into 3 slots … is 4 inches deep and the remaining drawers are 6 inches deep.
The interior condition of the drawers are remarkably, almost perfect.
The distinct gold maker’s mark is inside the front side of the top drawer … and brightly glistens.
The chest sits on 4 solid little silver feet-discs of heavy metal … that slide well on carpet.
Casters could alternatively easily be installed for “mobility” and/or to even transform it into a bar cart.
The natural exposed wood - the distinctive top … received 4 separate satin coats of Minwax polyurethane. It remains natural … for a striking contrast.
This piece could also be used as a living room or den piece … or as a bedside table … with distinction. (Or even that bar cart, with maybe a glass top added.)
At this point, after the very thorough refinishing job … a change to a different color, would be a breeze, at this point.
Either way … you’re good to go.
Real good; especially if you compare this to similar pieces.

Solid as a rock, joints. Very heavy and sturdy piece. Hairline scratches exist on the backside, but, that side would typically be situated against a wall. (The backside is a heavy piece of plywood, as opposed to solid oak, as is the balance of this item.) The second drawer from the bottom … has a very, very mild concave section of roughly three inches in diameter … as a result of “sanding out” a surface imperfection during the refinishing process. It is to the right of the drawer pull, as you face the chest. It is roughly 1/32” deep and barely noticeable. The balance is far above average. less
