An idyllic, South-western oil landscape showing a shepherd with his sheepdog resting in the shade of trees while his flock graze in pasture.
Cherokee cowboy and Western artist, Charles Damrow was born and raised in Sheboygan, Wisconsin; a self-taught and the youngest of 15 children, Damrow ran away from home at the age of 13 and later established friendships with Indians, cowboy artists and Indian Traders of the Southwest. Inspired by his love of horses, buffalo, Indian culture and the wild west, Damrow worked prolifically in the Wisconsin area, decorating taverns and restaurants with Western scenes. He achieved acclaim in his own lifetime and was friends with many notable westerners, including Olaf Wieghorst, Barry Goldwater, Peter McDonald and Bill McGee.
Charles Damrow's paintings are held in private collections and public collections nationwide. Noteworthy are two larger than life canvases in the collection of by Arizona's largest art patron, Bank President Walter Bimson. His largest painting, 'Crow Buffalo Hunters', is 8 x 10 feet; others include the 'Hopi Home Dance', which was painted during Damrow's time living on the Hopi reservation.
