An educator and calligrapher, Monica Dengo has taught, exhibited and studied around the world.
Dengo began the study of graphic design in Venice and London. In London she studied calligraphy and bookbinding at the Roehampton Institute (1991-1992) with Gaynor Goffe and Ewan Clayton. In 1993 she moved to San Francisco, California and spent three years studying independently full time manuscript production techniques, illumination, design and history of lettering with Thomas Ingmire. In addition to her studies with Ingmire, Dengo studied figure drawing with Eleanor Dickinson and at the San Francisco Art Institute Library. In Italy, Dengo studied both at the Correr Museum and Marciana libraries and was the artist-in-residence for two months at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice.
A recipient of numerous juried awards such as from the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial (2014), Dengo has exhibited widely and with success, including in America, Italy, Belgium, Egypt, the United Emirates, Pakistan, China and France.
Statement of the artist:
"I believe in writing by hand as a powerful means of expression of our humanity and see the act of writing as an act of marking our existence, a gesture that has deep meaning in itself and not only in connection with the verbal message that it carries. "
