Signed lower right, 'Lars Swane' (Danish, dated 1986, and inscribed verso 'Tilhører Palle Nielsen'.
A substantial, oil still-life showing variegated, red and yellow tulips informally arranged in a cobalt blue patterned vase, resting inside a cobalt and ivory bowl on a wooden table beside various books, with a view beyond through a window to a winter landscape.
Son of the artists Sigurd Swane and Christine Larsen, Lars Swane first studied under his parents and, subsequently, at the Copenhagen Technical School from 1929-30. From 1936-8, he studied with the celebrated Impressionist, Peter Rostrup Boyeson. Swane was the recipient of three prestigious scholarships which enabled him to travel and study widely, including to Germany and Czechoslovakia in 1930; Sweden, 1936, 1939, 1947; Paris, Brittany, Central France, Holland, Belgium, England in 1938; Holland, Paris, the South of France in 1949; Paris and Brittany in 1952.
The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, Swane exhibited with success over a long career. We are pleased to offer this vibrant still-life from Swane's middle period.
