The American Marine pattern was first made in the 19th century and was designed to be exported to the American market. Over the years it was made in a variety of colors such as blue, pink, green, mulberry and yes, black.
It also came in a variety of shapes such as ones with scalloped edges. Others were smooth sided, and others were multi sided and even octagonal. Some had the pattern all the way to the edges, while others only had a center decoration. A few "American Marine" pieces had cream-colored backgrounds, but most were white.
These eleven dinner plates are in a very nice, lightly used condition, out of the Beverly Farms estate of Massachusetts Senator Robert Rantoul.

These plates were clearly never used to dine; rather they were always displayed in one of the many China cupboards. There is some slight glaze crazing to the rear and one plate has a slight, barely noticable surface hairline crack. No breaks, repairs or restoration visible under the black light. less
