A beautifully executed piece with stunning detail. This vintage original watercolor painting depicts the ship Flying Cloud, which was built by Donald McKay and is his most renowned clipper ship. This maritime artwork would be a perfect addition to any nautical or coastal gallery wall and likely dates from the mid-20th century. The watercolor is unsigned but appears to be newly framed with a dark blue-gray mat in an antique gold engineered wood frame. Its overall measurements are approximately 16" x 20", with the art measuring about 11" x 14".
The Flying Cloud set the world's sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco, completing the journey in 89 days and 8 hours. This record stood for over 130 years, from 1854 to 1989. The ship also achieved a record for sailing from Liverpool to Australia in just 84 days. The Flying Cloud is famous for its close race with the Hornet in 1853, for having a woman navigator, Eleanor Creesy, and for its involvement in the Australian timber trades. less
