This is a bamboo gate that was used in a Japanese garden in Tokyo. Handmade using natural bamboo, wood (cedar?) poles stained to a dark color and black rope (Kuronawa).
The bamboo has faded due to the natural elements and shows like a beautiful base like an abstract painting.
The sturdy frame is made up of two round poles on each end joined together by two flat horizontal wood slats. Additional four bamboo holes placed horizontally ensure further stability and give a depth to the gate/fence.
Hand cut bamboo poles of about 1.5 inch in diameter are arranged vertically fifteen poles on one side and ten poles on the other. Both sides of this gate/fence may be alternately used as front or back. Round Bamboo poles are arranged in an eye-catching pattern.
The gate-maker has cut and arranged the bamboo so the ridges are all aligned on the top. Black jute rope is used to tie them all together.
This gate/fence is a glimpse of wonderful Japanese handiwork evoking a sense of the wabi-sabi aesthetic.
A wonderfully individual statement piece for a contemporary patio, garden or exterior
