Decorate an office or study with this elegant pair of antique paintings. Crafted in France circa 1870, and signed in the lower right corner "d'apres Debat-Ponsan", each artwork is hand painted on board, and set inside the original beautiful carved gilt wood frame embellished with intricate carvings and patterns. The paintings depict charming rural scenes, capturing the essence of pastoral life. The left painting features a woman tending to cows by a riverside, while the right painting shows a couple in traditional attire, seated outside a rustic building with a cow nearby. The detailed brushwork and vivid colors of the paintings bring out the idyllic beauty and simplicity of rural France during this period, making these pieces a delightful representation of 19th-century French art. Both paintings are in excellent condition with rich colors. A wonderful addition for a wall or displayed on library or office shelving.
Edouard Debat-Ponsan ( 1847-1913 ), was a French academic painter noted for his allegorical works, scenes of peasant life and Orientalist works. Pupil at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris where Cabanel was his teacher, he was one of the most prolific genre painters of his time. He exhibited at the Salon from 1870 on, won the second prize in Rome in 1873 and a second medal in 1874. This same year, he received the Troyon prize at the Institute. After having been admitted to the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889, he then was dismissed and refused the bronze medal which had been awarded by the jury. In 1894 he painted “La Couronne de Toulouse” on the ceiling of the Illustres room in the Toulouse Capitole. The subjects he chooses in his works are varied, since he is just as well a painter of historical compositions, landscapes of an academic nature, portraits, numerous peasantry scenes as well as orientalist scenes, the latter being quite rarely represented. Edouard Debat-Ponsan participated in naturalism, a fundamental movement at the end of the 19th century. His liking for the portrayal of manners, stamped with realism references, perfectly integrates the impressionists’ techniques. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
