Essay by Robert Rosenblum, edited by David Whitney.
This stunning collection of 112 Andy Warhol portraits - two variations each of 56 people, is published in conjunction with a major exhibition organized by The Whitney Museum of American Art.
Celebrated in the 1960's for his Pop Art paintings of Campbell's soup cans and film stars, Warhol found equal renown in the 1970's with his commissioned portraiture. here, in glorious color, are Andy's remarkable interpretations of his friends : collector's, art dealers and beautiful people. Among those included are Diane Von Furstenberg, Halston, David Hockney, Brook Hayward, Mick Jagger, Liza Minelli, and Yves St. Laurent.
The introductory essay by Robert Rosenblum, one of America's most distinguished art historians, places Warhol's work in the context of traditional portrait painting. In translating " the journalistic medium of photography into the realm of art ", Warhol revived this tradition at a time when it had been abandoned by most serious artists. His use use of the mechanized look of commercial photography grants him a new aesthetic language and an utterly Contemporary style that paradoxically preserves its subject for posterity.
Warhol is a celebrity among celebrities, the ideal court painter to the 1970's international aristocracy. Individually, these portraits capture the complex personalities of their subjects, together they capture the look of society in this decade.
