He played the … more Rodolphe Bosshard was a major figure in Swiss painting during the first half of the 20th century. He played the piano exceptionally well and had a natural gift for both music and painting. In 1920 Bosshard moved to Paris where so many foreign artists had gathered. He began his career painting Portraits, Landscapes and Still Lifes, while enjoying the company of the intellectuals of that era in Paris.

In 1933 Bosshard went to Greece, where he discovered the Magic of Light. He also met, in 1933, Le Corbusier and Jean Cocteau, who both became inspirational friends.

Rodolphe Bosshard did numerous Still Life paintings that depicted fruit. In particular, I have seen many that were of apples, usually in a group of three. Three apples can symbolize how much love a husband can have for his wife. Three apples are seen in many different mythologies, representing a wide variety of subjects. Why Bosshard chose to paint three apples in so many paintings I was unable to find out in my research. But this is a happy, sunny painting, so perhaps the meaning does not matter. Just enjoy the serenity of this picture.
