Known as a newel post, this well-carved oak support column would have been affixed to a stair railing, providing a visually stunning terminal of the balustrade. Hand-carved in the 1700’s, this newel post was found in a house in Namur, Belgium. Based on the drastic outcurve of the post, it was most likely positioned on the left side of the stairs.
The top of the newel post depicts a human face set within a large leaf curl. A similar, but much larger curled leaf extends from beneath the face, running down to the main body of the post. The main body is full of life and movement, with an attenuated leaf and a gadrooned leaf combining to for a massive volute that curves out and to the right. Smaller leaf tips extend into the open space, leaving no area without carving. The oak has a rich brown patina, which has been accentuated by French wax. A beautiful architectural, our Belgian newel post would make a wonderful addition to any staircase.
