Widely recognized as a significant painter of the “Ecole de Paris” and a well-known figure in the French Abstract Expressionism movement, Charles Lapicque (1898-1988) remains a much loved and much collected artist of the mid-20th century. An engineer and scientist by training, he held a doctorate in the field of optics, scholarly endeavors which strongly influenced his artistic works. A protégé of Jacques Lipchitz, he turned to painting , sculpture, and printmaking in 1928 and was commissioned in 1938 to create 5 decorative panels for Paris' Palais de la Decouverte. As WWII approached, he worked with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry studying night vision technology and the distinction of form. During the Nazi occupation, he banded with fellow avant-garde artists to create what the Germans derided as "degenerated art". Amongst his many accolades, he was awarded the Price Raoul Dufy medal of the 1953 Biennial of Venice.
This limited edition, original lithograph " Les Animaux Sacres", was issued in 1962. The colorful image appears on heavy cream colored stock with 3 straight edges and a deckled bottom edge. This piece is #71 of 120 strikes (noted on lower left) and signed in pencil by Lapicque at the lower right. Unframed. Overall dimensions, 14"W x 22"H; image, 9.5"W x 13"H.
