Wedgwood's Queensware is a fine, cream-colored earthenware pottery. It is named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the Queen Consort of George III. The invention of creamware was the result of Josiah Wedgwood's search for a British copy of costly Chinese porcelain. The cream color was considered a fault at the time, but, during the centuries since, Queensware has become the choice of many connoisseurs. The Edme pattern of Queensware is likewise treasured by collectors, and it has an interesting story.
Edme was commissioned in 1906 by the French architecture and design firm Dannier Freres. The classic embossed ribbing around the pattern is reminiscent of the ornamentation so common in the architecture of the time. It also reflects the ridges of a clam shell, and harks back to Josiah Wedgwood's love for shell collecting. Edme dinnerware was introduced in 1908, and remained in production for many years. It remains an extremely popular pattern today - some fifteen years after it was finally discontinued. This timeless design transcends all styles, and looks good in any setting.
Just lately, Edme is experiencing a revival of interest, as a result of it appearing in "DOWNTON ABBEY"; the dinnerware used downstairs by the Crawleys' staff.
This sugar and cream jug pair were manufactured just over one hundred years ago. The condition is good, with a couple of very small chips under the lid.
