Twenty-five miles north or Khenifra, a narrow road leads eastward to the small village of Ain Leuh, market town for the Beni M'Guild rug. These carpets have relatively always a similar format, heavy pile with symmetrical compositions containing lengthwise bans of diamonds, half-diamonds designs separated by rows of tufts. Beni M’Guild is also in the contrary, a solid design with no symbols and geometric patterns.
This region is populated with giant trees, waterfalls and lakes. They support a very harsh climate, which is why the Beni M'Guild rugs are often thick pile rug and shaggy. These marvelous pieces have the particularity of being, for the most part, united knotted carpets, in absolutely amazing colors. Subtle blue green, purple, peachy, berry colors or red brown in distinct densities. The nuances created by the staggering of work over time give rise to waves of different tonalities. Male symbols (like herringbone or fish bones) are no less numerous, but just less visible, as they occupy the space differently and it's generally frame female motifs. These are usually patterns in strips or bars.
Symplicity, elegance and beauty: that is what Beni M’Guild’s rugs represent. The Aït M’Guild, known as Beni M’Guild rug are a large Berber tribe that was called before: the Aït Oumalou. Most of the cases, these rugs are reversible. It is the real expression of the creativity of the Berber woman, combining all her intuitions as well as the skills and techniques she acquired with the years to be able to create such a precious masterpiece.
