This Andy Warhol very rare original vintage 1970 " Raid The Icebox " custom framed lithograph print landmark exhibition poster is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
This is a rare opportunity for true Warhol fans and collectors as this coveted lithograph print landmark exhibition poster is long out of print and very scarce to find.
The exhibition poster is published by The Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design, printed in 1970 in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the groundbreaking exhibition, which was the first time a major important artist was invited to curate and reinterpret museum objects from a museum collection archive.
Organized by renowned collector Dominique De Menil, who thought the idea of an important Contemporary artist being invited to select the works for the exhibit would provide a fresh, less academic interpretation of the collection. It would be made up of works from the storerooms of the RISD Museum, and the artist curating the show would be Andy Warhol.
This landmark exhibition was not only noteworthy for Warhol's idiosyncratic choice of objects - including shoes, parasols, hat boxes, Native American pottery and blankets, wallpaper, bundles of auction catalogs, even a ginkgo tree growing in the courtyard, but for the radical way he chose to display the works : along with their storage cabinets, racks, and shelves, as they were found in storage when he first saw them.
The disruption of the museum space was radical at its time, with Warhol effectively laying bare the connection between the cultured act of collecting and the lower class, habitual act of shopping.
Warhol and a small entourage made 6 trips to the museum during the summer of 1969, going through storerooms, all the while tape recording conversations, snapping polaroid photos of works, and whenever objects struck his fancy, exclaiming " I'll Take Them! ".
Warhol's curatorial choices make better sense in hindsight, especially when one considers the contents of his home and studio that were made known through auctions and exhibitions after his death. Artist curated museum exhibitions are now commonplace, but " Raid The Icebox " was the exhibition that started it all and is inarguably the RISD museum's best known exhibit. It continues to interest artists, scholars, and collectors throughout the world.
It is presented in an archival museum style preservation float mounted, ivory cream matted presentation. Custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a matte eggshell finish black wood frame molding.
It is in excellent condition. The poster print is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age and light signs of handling. There is some light surface and edge wear, small corner pinholes, and a small piece of tape on the upper left side edge. It is brand newly custom framed and has never been displayed.
