Note: Faux blooms are not included.
This winsome ash splint curly wall pocket basket was handwoven by a Midwestern basket artisan in the manner of Woodland Native American basket makers of the late 1800s. In the late 1800s, the Victorian era brought about a demand for smaller, more ornate baskets known as “fancy baskets.” These baskets often incorporated newly developed decorative weave designs such as the porcupine twist, the curly and the ribbon weave. Previously, baskets were woven to serve a utilitarian purpose but the Woodland weavers began to create baskets in new forms made explicitly with European tastes in mind. These items, such as wall pockets, jewelry baskets, purses and sewing baskets reflected the adaptability and creativity of the Woodland basket makers. This beauty is handwoven from black ash splint with curly weave rows all around. Color is a rich dusty greige stain finish with umber undertones. It measures 11¼” high from tip of handle to the base (7¾” high if you exclude the handle); 10½ x 8½” W/D; interior 7½” x 9” x 7½” H/W/D; weight 9 oz. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. Maker unknown. Note: faux blooms are not included. Uniquely, one-of-a-kind and a must have for a basket aficionado or the perfect gift for someone who is!
