A rare and exceptional antique French speckled plum pudding mahogany rosewood verde marble gilt bronze ormolu large gentleman's bureau dressing table / writing desk (coiffeuse poudreuse ou table de toilette d’homme) with flip-top mirror and concealed storage, in the manner of Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806)
Late 18th / early 19th century, very fine quality, exceptionally executed in Neoclassical inspired Louis XVI taste, crafted of the highest quality solid mahogany and exotic mottled mahogany veneers, having a brass banded rectangular top with central quartered reverse diamond matched parquetry panel, lifting open and transforming into a large adjustable mirror, flanked by inset white veined verde green marble panels that slide open to reveal secret storage compartments. Breakfronted front and back shaped apron with large drawer and distinctive recessed panel of richly figured two-tone mahogany framed by gilt brass beaded trim and raised contrasting rosewood cross-banding, rising on tapering squared speckled mahogany legs outlined with delicate cross-banding and partially inset beaded ornamentation, mounted with coeur de rai relief decorated gilt bronze bands, terminating in finely chased and chiseled fiolated acanthus gilded bronze capped feet sabots. circa 1800
The perfect blend of elegant, sophisticated, and masculine, reserved yet luxurious, this table is truly a work of art. We have been doing this a long time and have never seen anything quite like it. Definitely the work of a well regarded top-tier ébéniste, almost certainly a custom one-of-a-kind commission.
