Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
Nestled deep in the heart of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Copper Canyon region of Chihuahua is home to Mexico's most longstanding indigenous Indians, the Rarámuri, commonly known as the Tarahumara. Tarahumara basketry is “twilled” (the weft is passed over multiple warp elements to create a diagonal pattern) either with a single or a double weave. Leaves from sotol or yucca plants, indigenous to the area, are commonly used by the Tarahumara women to weave their baskets. This beautifully sturdy cachepot is handwoven using split leaves from the sotol plant in a tight over and under basket weave pattern; petite triangular woven peg feet on the underside (see photo 10) provide slight elevation to prevent wear to the bottom. Color is naturally aged sotol leaves in pale beige, ecru and almond hues. This beauty measures 10” x 10” x 7” W/D/H. The interior measures 8” wide at the bottom and middle while the rim and neck are 6¼” wide; interior height 6½”; weight 11 oz. Photos were taken in the round to show the varying shades and nuances of the cachepot. In excellent condition with little, if any wear. Taut tight weave will allow this beauty to last a lifetime. Uniquely, one-of-a-kind and a must have for a basket aficionado or the perfect gift for someone who is!
