A studio pottery dish or shallow bowl by the American husband and wife art duo Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Scheier (1908-2007). Signed to the underside, the piece has a predominantly blue glaze with two incised face designed superimposed on each other.
Edwin and Mary Scheier were partners and collaborators in all things from their marriage in 1937 until her death in 2007. They began their individual lives in the arts; Edwin as a puppeteer and Mary as a watercolorist and graphic artist for an advertising firm. He traveled across the United States with the Works Progress Administration; she worked for the New Deal’s Federal Art Project.
For a time, she was the director of Big Stone Gap Art Gallery in Abingdon, Virginia. Mary met Edwin Scheier here, and they married soon after. As they established their reputation as fine art ceramicists, they were offered positions at the University of New Hampshire. The couple taught there for over 20 years before relocating to Oaxaca, Mexico in the 1960s. Both artists worked in mediums in addition to ceramics and were accomplished educators.
The Scheiers' works are held in the collections of the New Hampshire Library, the Currier Museum of Art, and the Herberger College of the Arts at Arizona State University.
