The beauty of the simple yet functional design of this type of turned and notched ladderback chair derived its basic format from that of early 17th-century chairs. This cutie is handcrafted in the style of the classic Poyner (Dick Poyner 1802-1882) chair with its mule ear stiles and structurally solid mortise and tenon joinery. The double twill plaited cane seat consists of each weft passing over and under three warps on the top side of the seat with the pattern continuing over the rails and woven over and under with four warps on the seat’s underside. By weaving on both the top, bottom and around the rails, the weaving pattern creates an empty pocket which tends to take the pressure off the cane when someone sits in it hence the reason for the excellent condition of the seat. Handcrafted from solid oak wood with a mid-tone walnut stain finish which allows the beautiful grain pattern of the oak wood to show through. The double twill plaited cane seat’s naturally aged mélange of pale and mid-tone wheat hues plays well with the chair’s stain finish. The simple design consists of gentle turned legs, three horizontal rails contained by the two notched mule ear stiles and double H-cross stretchers which provide stability and structural integrity. This cutie measures 36” x 17½” x 15” H/W/D, seat 16” x 14” W/D; seat-to-floor height 17½”; back 18½” x 16½” H/W; weight approximately 15 lbs. “Guesstimation” as to when it was made is early 20th-century (1910 to 1920) but could it could be slightly older. In excellent structural condition with age-appropriate wear. The seat, as mentioned above, is in excellent condition with minimal wear due to the double twill plaited construction. Small chairs, for me, have always been somewhat of an accessory piece around our home; you can never have too many. A good one fits into any space! Small or large, in and out of doors, you can move it around from room-to-room, space-to-space, to meet the need of the moment. I purchased this petite chair from an estate auction and it’s been used as a décor prop.
