Martti Olavi Mäkelä (1929-2007), a distinguished Finnish sculptor and painter, created "Kasakanhevonen" (Cossack Horse) in 1994. This striking oil on linen painting measures 25.75" x 21.25" and is set within its original oak frame, bringing the total dimensions to 27.75" x 23.5". The piece is boldly signed and dated across the bottom, exemplifying Mäkelä's confident hand.
The artwork features a proud and regal horse's head in a 3/4 profile, adorned in full Cossack regalia. The expressionist detailing of the horse's attire reflects the artist's skill in capturing historical and cultural elements with emotive brushstrokes. Attached to the stretcher bars are the original artist tag and title, alongside two pages of information and images of Mäkelä's other works,as well as, a tag that includes details of the gallery where the painting was exhibited.
Martti Olavi Mäkelä studied at Hyvinkää Art School from 1984 to 1986 and attended various courses, including the ABC Drawing School (1947-1949) and Konstifund courses in Estonia (1989, 1990). His extensive exhibition history spans several Finnish cities and international venues, with notable solo and joint exhibitions. Mäkelä's works are also part of public collections in municipalities, hospitals, banks, and town halls across Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Mäkelä was an art teacher at Lohja Työväenopisto and conducted art courses both domestically and internationally, including in Germany in 1992. He was an active member of the Lohja Art Association, Taiteilijaseura, and Finnish War Invalid Artists, contributing significantly to the Finnish art community throughout his career. less
