[About the Painter, Mildred Sands] One of the most respected of contemporary American artists, Mildred Sands has won more than 100 awards, including five Gold Medals in national competitions and a Senatorial Citation for her artistic achievements.
The artist examines each print after it is pulled, and if it meets her approval, she hand-pencils her signature and the date in the lower margin.
This product has its Certificate of Authenticity to certify that this artwork “Autumn at Hopewell Village” by Mildred Sands is an authentic collotype print issued in limited edition by The Franklin Gallery. It is further certified that this work was personally inspected, hand-signed and dated by the artist.
For this work, the artist has chosen the medium of the collotype print, considered to be one of the most demanding methods of high-fidelity reproduction. Collotype is a century-old printing process requiring such a high degree of skill and craftsmanship that it has become almost a lost art today.
[Historical note about Hopewell Village, Pennsylvania] Nestled in the hills flanking the Schuykill River in Pennsylvania, Hopewell Village, the historical settlement Mildred Sands has depicted in this collotype print, looks much as it did 150 years ago. Founded in 1744, the village became a center of iron production when Mark Bird built a furnace there in 1770. For more than 100 years, the furnace supplied iron for all kinds of implements in times of peace and for arms and munitions in times of war. Then in 1883 the roaring fire was extinguished because the old charcoal-fired furnace that had been at work for so long was replaced by more advanced furnaces. Consequently, Hopewell was abandoned and time stood still for this isolated little village. Then in 1938the National Park Service began to restore the old buildings to their original condition, and today Hopewell Village is a national historic site.
