Artist Biography David Charlesworth GRA a known British artist who was born in the mid 20th century in the year 1954, he started to draw when he was a very young child, he finished his very first commission when he was just 12 years of age, when he was old around 16 he began to work in an art studio where he learnt his trade from a company apprenticeship where he served five years. He gained great life experience from working with the experienced established older artists, he was shown how to develop his own style.
He held his early exhibitions at the Portland Group of Artists, Chesterfield, then he later became in charge of the group at only 18. Charlesworth strongly believes that art gives you time to reflect & it is physically tangible that can be appreciated & admired now & by future generations. There is a certain beauty by the way a specific brushstroke or hue colour can excite the eye by conveying movement. He has well over 40 years experience in art also illustrations. He is a full member of the ‘Guild of Railway Artists, also being one of the last Litho artist apprentices. He has a painting which is been exhibited at the Chesterfield Museum & Art Gallery.
Ship biography HMS Franklin (J84) was a Halcyon-class minesweeper (officially, "fleet minesweeping sloop") of the British Royal Navy, which was commissioned in 1938 as a survey ship. Having a displacement of 875 long tons (889 t) full load, a length of 245 ft 9 in (74.90 m). Beam of 33ft 6 in (10.21 m) A draught of 9ft (2.7 m). Propulsion 2 Admiralty 3 drum water tube boilers. Parsons steam turbines, 2000 shp (1,500 kW) on 2 shafts. A top speed of 16.5 knots (30.6 km/h). A range of 7200 nautical miles or 8300 kilometres at 10 knots. A crew compliment of 121 & armament of 1 x 12 pounder AA gun (wartime only). The ship was built by the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company, Troon, with engines provided by Thornycroft of Woolston. She was laid down on 17 December 1936 and launched on 22 December 1937.
As a survey ship she differed from the others in her class by having a larger bridge, and a surveying chartroom aft. During the war the ship was armed with a single 12-pounder anti-aircraft gun forward. Franklin was commissioned on 17 August 1938, and carried out surveys off the Thames Estuary. In June 1939 she was sent to survey St. Lewis Inlet, Newfoundland, but in August was ordered home in anticipation of the outbreak of World War II. During the war she carried out surveys around the coast of the UK, mostly in connection with the laying of minefields. Also between these duties also acted as a convey escort in the North Sea.
In June 1944, under the command of Lt.Cdr. Edmund George Irving, she was deployed off the French coast, following the Normandy landings, surveying ports as they fell to Allied forces. By November she was surveying the entrance to the Scheldt. Following VE Day on 8 May 1945, she carried out wreck and mine clearance surveys in German ports, finally returning to the UK in October 1945. Franklin remained in service, mainly operating off the eastern coast of England, until decommissioned in January 1953. She was then placed in Reserve, until placed on the Disposal List, and sold for breaking up by Clayton and Davie, Dunston-on-Tyne. She was towed to the breaker's yard in February 1956. Decommissioned in 1953. The Pentland Firth is a strait which separates the Orkney Islands from Caithness in the north of Scotland.
Provenance the artist said that originally this painting was commissioned for wife of a former crew member who served aboard HMS Franklin in North Sea escort duties during WW2. Created in memory of the ship and as gift to her husband who survived WW2. Channel Island Auction label & in collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
