The Empire shape and Chinoiserie tole style of this decorative lavabo are sure to create interest in your space. This three piece metal vintage water trough assimilates into wall decor that could be used indoors or in a protected outdoor space. The vibrant red color background is accentuated in gold/bronze toile painting in the traditional Chinoiserie style in a landscape scene of birds, mountains and pagodas. The painted surface is raised in some places to accentuate the art. The piece comes with affixed hardware for ease of hanging.
There's a sticker in the basin marked, "Smith and Watson, Red Tole Lavabo". Given that it was placed there, my assumption is this piece was purchased through "Smith and Watson" which is a furniture store established in NYC in 1907 as "Smith and Watson Fine Furniture" and is still in existence today and was best known as the "London Furniture Shop in New York".
