History: When introduced, the present chair model was first only available to order direct from Germany. (3) other limited versions were offered by Baker at the fall furniture show in High Point, NC, in October of 1984. The iconic chair was formally introduced in the US by Baker at the Chicago "NEOCON" exhibition in June 1985. The price was $4927. At the time, the company was developing the "Baker Executive Office" division, and for several years the company made an important publicity oriented introduction at that annual show. The Porsche chairs shipped to customers in the Spring of 1986. Various finishes evolved over the 9 year period of production. The series IP 85S followed. None of which seemed to surpass the elegance and simplicity of the original IP 84S.
There is nothing like the original!
About the designer: Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (1935 – 2012), nicknamed "Butzi", was a German designer best known for the first Porsche 911. He is the son of Ferry Porsche, and the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche.
While his grandfather and father were both engineers, he was more involved in working out the appearance of a product. He never thought of himself as an artist or designer, but more as a technically talented craftsman in shaping. (Wiki)
Note: This iconic chair design is part of the permanent collection at the MOMA museum in New York. less
