Canvas sze 35 x 27.5 Beautiful giltwood frame. Signed. Herzog was prominent during his lifetime, and among his collectors were Queen Victoria and Czar Alexander II. He was born in Bremen, Germany, and, intrigued by the potential offered by America, he emigrated to the United States when he was in his late 20s and settled in Philadelphia. He was fascinated by the variety of the landscape and traveled widely in the East, West, and in the mid 1870's to Mexico. He also made many trips to Florida where he visited his son, Herman Jr., a chemist in Gainesville, and painted the exotic landscape with towering palm trees. He was a wise investor of money, and because of the early purchase of shares in the Pennsylvania Railroad, did not strive to sell his work during his lifetime. His painting was nearly forgotten until 1971 when one of his grandsons began releasing his paintings, and by 1992, a retrospective exhibition of his work was held. Hermann Ottomar Herzog (1832 – 1932) Hermann Herzog was born in Bremen, Germany and entered the Düsseldorf Academy at age seventeen where he was subject to their rigorous standards. Herzog achieved early commercial success, allowing him to travel widely and continue his training. His patrons included royalty and nobility throughout Europe. In the late 1860s Herzog went on to settle near Philadelphia in the United States, he travelled throughout the U.S. and Mexico; his most noted subjects were California, Maine and Florida. In 1876, he received an award at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition for his painting of Sentinel Rock in Yosemite. Herzog's work is sometimes considered to be part of the Hudson River School, although it is more realistic and less dramatic than works by peers Frederic Edwin Church or Albert Bierstadt. See less
