Tove & Edvard Kindt Larsen "Fireplace" chair designed in 1939 and produced by Gustav Bertelsen. This chair is unmarked, as are almost all Tove & Edvard Kindt Larsen pieces.
Measures: 28.5" high, 26" wide, 29" deep with an arm height of 22.5", seat height of 13", seat width of 21" and seat depth of 17".
This important chair, created to sit in a den in front of an open fireplace, was first exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Exhibition in 1939 where it was immediately hailed as a masterpiece of modern design. It was a structural innovation, and its method of design has been repeatedly adapted by other designers ever since. The separation of the upholstered seat from the wooden frame, the distinctive x-shaped cross bar under the seat and the unique shape of the top of the arm, set this chair aside from anything that had come before. The fireplace chair is in the permanent collection of the Danish Museum of Art and Design, Copenhagen.
About the Kindt-Larsens:
Edvard and Tove Kindt-Larsen were a Danish husband and wife team who worked together beginning in 1937, when they opened their own office in Copenhagen. Both studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. During the course of their long careers, they received numerous prizes, honors and medals for their work. less
