Description: Exquisitely gilt painted early 19th century Chinese lacquered wood game box having elaborate depictions of Chinese imperial court life, with … more Exquisitely gilt painted early 19th century Chinese lacquered wood game box having elaborate depictions of Chinese imperial court life, with images of people in fancy robes, pagodas and lush gardens, finely painted throughout and raised on lion's paw feet. A set of beautifully painted 12 card trays and 5 containers for game chips/counters fits neatly inside the box.
The twelve card trays were designed specifically for the Regency card game of 'Pope Joan': four trays gilded with Chinese scenes along with eight 'boodle' trays having representations of the early playing cards - King, Queen, Knave, Matrimony, Intrigue, Game, 9 of diamonds, ace of diamonds; these were the trays on which players place bets at the start of each game.
Made for the European market exported from China by the East India Company during the British Regency era, circa 1795 -1837. less
