About Cartier
Cartier is a renowned French luxury goods conglomerate known for designing, manufacturing, distributing, and selling jewelry and watches. Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the company remained family-owned until 1964 and still maintains its headquarters in Paris. Cartier is famous for its jewelry and wristwatches, including the "Bestiary" collection, the Panthère brooch of the 1940s created for Wallis Simpson, the diamond necklace for Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, and the "Santos" wristwatch of 1904. The company has a rich history of clientele, including royalty and celebrities. The Duchess of Cambridge wears the Cartier Ballon Bleu timepiece. King Edward VII of England called Cartier "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers" and, for his coronation in 1902, ordered 27 tiaras and issued a Royal Warrant to Cartier in 1904.
The Cartier tradition of clock and watch making extends almost as far back as the founding of the company. In 1898, Louis Cartier, one of the three Cartier brothers and grandson of founder Louis-François, moved to 13 rue de La Paix with his father, Alfred. Louis was a talented creator of jewels and art objects, and confirmed his talent by tying his craft with clock making traditions, lost now for more than a century. Thereafter, Cartier's clocks, table clocks, and watches were manufactured with an emphasis on perfection, beauty and originality. Clock making, at first a secondary activity, became the predominant activity and prestige of Cartier.
