Beautiful & Colorful Antique Japanese Textile Art, Hand Painted Banner Depicting a Samurai Warrior. Might it be a Boy's Day Nobori? The colors are still vibrant and the painting is quite stunning.
The annual Boy's Day Celebration in Japan, Tango no Sekku, per the University of Hawaii's website is "a festival to pray for the health and courage of boys". Was interesting to read about the long history of this celebration & how it has evolved through hundreds of years.
Which still brings me to admit that I do not know the history or even the age of this banner. I believe it is painted on a raw silk.
It is hemmed by hand and has a slot for a rod/dowel for hanging. less
