Sir William Hamilton was the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples from 1764 to 1800. Before returning to England, he commissioned drawings of his classical antiquities collection. The second catalogue of his collection was edited and illustrated by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (1751–1829), Director of the Naples Academy of Art, and titled Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases Mostly of Pure Greek Workmanship Discovered in Sepulchres in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies but Chiefly in the Neighbourhood of Naples During the Course of the Years MDCCLXXXIX and MDCCLXXXX. The ship carrying the actual vases, the HMS Colossus, sunk in 1798 and the cargo was lost; the engravings are the only record remaining. Aeneas and Anchises Escape Troy is an unnumbered plate in volume 4 of this catalogue. Nicely matted and framed, ready to display. Part of a set of two Hamilton framed engravings listed separately. In very good condition with minor imperfections as shown.
