Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828) created "The Disasters of War," a series of eighty copper plates, between 1810 and 1820. The series portrayed the invasion of Spain by Napoleonic troops.

"The Disasters of War" was never published during Goya's lifetime. The Real Academia Calcografia Nacional acquired the copper plates and printed its first edition of etchings in 1863 and subsequent editions thereafter. This set of etchings is printed on laid paper, some bearing the Joseph Guarro tower watermark. Based on other examples we have seen, this is consistent with the 1923 edition.
