Original pencil signed silver gelatin photograph featuring an enrapt male member of a large audience by photographer Shirley Carter Burden, 1953. Signed "S.C. Burden" lower right. A member of the Vanderbilt family, Burden dedicated this social awareness piece to his niece Shim in 1953 making this a unique and personal piece.
Original vintage work of art on paper displayed on a white mat with a gold border and fits a standard-size frame. Archival plastic sleeve and Certificate of Authenticity included. Artwork, 14"H x 11"W; mat, 20"H x 16"W.
Shirley Carter Burden, a great-great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, was the founder of the Burden Gallery in Manhattan and for a long time the chairman of Aperture, a photography magazine. He was also a trustee of the Museum of Modern Art and former chairman of its photography department and a trustee and former teacher at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
