Herman Miller hired Frykholm in 1970 as their first in-house graphic designer. A fresh graduate from Cranbrook, Frykholm's first assignment only two weeks into the job was to design a screenprinted poster for the company's annual summer picnic. The resulting design in pop art style, a set of teeth clamped over an ear of corn, won an AIGA award that year. He went on to design a new Herman Miller summer picnic poster every year from 1970 to 1989, each depicting picnic food, all playing with scale, abstraction, pattern, and vibrant color. These original posters were made in limited runs and were available for purchase only by employees and close colleagues. Today, Frykholm's posters can be found in several museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
